American life in the best way possible

As an international student, there are a large variety of things that you should be prepared for before attending an American university. These range from things such as fluency in the English language, to a vast understanding of cultural differences between your native country and America. All of these things are of equal importance to ensuring that you integrate and adjust to American life in the best way possible.

First, you will have to have a fluent and working understanding of the English language. You should not only have a basic understanding of the language – it’s of extreme importance to be able to fluently and completely express yourself in English. This skill will not only help you socialize, but also finding a job should you decide to become employed in America, and in understanding and speaking with your professors. A consideration pertaining to language that many do not think of is accents. Even if you are from a country where English is the national language is English, you probably do possess an accent that differs from the American accent. Not only should you work to make your accent more understandable to Americans, but you should work to understand the American accent as well. Even if you are speaking the same language, a thick accent can become a huge barrier to fulfilling conversation, and can affect your performance in the job market, and even in school. A number of universities in Spain

International students are seriously considering the option of studying in Spain nowadays, thanks to the country’s transformation into the parliamentary monarchy and the growing number of universities with excellent facilities. Spain is quickly turning out to be the next hot spot for tourists and students in Europe because of a friendly and captivating atmosphere in the country. It boasts more than 70 universities that carry forward the legacy of the traditional Spanish university education, started from the 11th century or before. Students who are ready to study in Spain can either opt for the majority of public universities, some private universities or a few universities managed by the Catholic Church directly. Lots of career options in Spain make it the favorite of all.

A number of universities in Spain are constantly ranked among top 300 universities in the world. University of Barcelona, Autonomous University of Madrid, Pablo de Olavide University, University of Almeria and University of Valencia are to name a few.

Established in 1450, the University of Barcelona functions as a public university. You can explore all sorts of programs there, such as bachelor, master and doctorate level degrees. There are 20 departments in the university that also offers a number of online courses for students worldwide. As far as the total registration of students for various programs is concerned, it always surpasses 60,000 with more than 2,000 residing on campus. Scholars from overseas institutions can pursue courses at the university through several exchange programs. However, those who are interested to take up a full-time course will have to clear the Spanish entrance examinations and the university application procedure to study in Spain. IRO Scholarships at KU Leuven – Belgium

The scholarships are only granted for doctoral or pre-doctoral programmes. Scholarships for a pre-doctoral programme are awarded for only one year. The scholarship may be converted into a scholarship for doctoral studies, thus extended for 4 more years, on the condition that you pass the pre-doctoral programme with distinction and are admitted to the doctoral programme.

The maximum period for which you may be awarded a scholarship is thus 5 years: 1 pre-doctoral year and 4 doctoral years. The scholarship is renewable each year and its renewal depends on the annual evaluation by your supervisor. Further extensions are not possible through the Interfaculty Council for Development Co-operation and further scholarships cannot be awarded, since the law permits tax-free doctoral scholarships only for a maximum of 4 years.

Application procedure

If you meet our scholarship requirements, you will need to complete the online application form accurately and fully. The new online application form will be available only by 1st December 2009. In the meantime, you may already submit the requested documents below and a brief CV, but you are still required to fill in the new online application form in December 2009. For your proposed research, kindly print out your chosen faculty research topic from one of the doctoral schools, and include your motivation, OR submit your personal research proposal for a doctoral dissertation signed by your prospective supervisor. Include your brief motivation explaining how your topic or proposal can be approached and treated in a manner relevant to development co-operation.

You are also requested to submit:

  1. a certificate of professional engagement, signed by a person or an institution confirming that, upon your return, you will be accepted for a specific position or job in your country of origin or in another developing country
  2. two letters of recommendation by persons who are qualified to assess your academic capabilities, to be submitted in sealed envelopes
  3. a certificate of English proficiency, for instance a TOEFL score or an IELTS score or results of an equivalent test (only for new students who have not yet been enrolled at K.U.Leuven)
  4. only for applicants for the doctoral programme in economics or applied economics: a GMAT or GRE score (for a GMAT score, please contact GMAC [code JQH7X51] and arrange for an original score card to be sent; see below)
  5. copies of applications for other scholarships, if any

Any applications that do not meet the requirements and any incomplete or late applications will not be accepted. K.U.Leuven does not acknowledge receipt of inadmissible applications.

Kindly submit your application file (CV, faculty research topic or personal research proposal, motivation, certificate of professional engagement) to Mr. Edmund Guzman, International Office, Atrecht College, Naamsestraat 63 - bus 5410, B-3000 Leuven, Belgium before 1st January 2009. The two letters of recommendation should be submitted in sealed envelopes or sent directly by the persons completing them to the same address also before 1st January 2009. The TOEFL or IELTS score should be sent to the International Office by ETS or the British Council, respectively. The GMAT or GRE score should be sent to the International Office by ETS or GMAC, respectively.

The new online application form will be available only by 1st December 2009. All applicants are still required to complete the new online application form in December 2009.
